I agree with previous post ... I don't think a GT is a good choice for your 55 gallon tank ... you could go with a Blue Acara (similar fish, but smaller) or a variety of combinatons of Firemouth, Convict, Rainbow or other small- to medium-sized cichlids

Rams are good choice ... Bolivian Rams might be easier for a nube ...

I did something similar under my 90G tank ... put a 20G, currently a planted tank stocked with a pair of young Keyhole cichlids ... I might move them out later and replace with Rams or Curviceps ... there are a lot of good options ...

yup, as noted, while BA's are generally more peaceful than other similar ciclhlids, there are always exceptions ... good luck

Rainbow cichlids (h. multispinosa) are a good choice ... small central american cichlids, peaceful, easy to keep ...

I have this plant ... I got one small plant (for free) from my LFS, and since then I now have it growing in five different planted tanks ... in other words, it is really easy to grow, and it grows fast in big tanks I let it float on the surface, weeding out a portion of it every few weeks ...
