    Pond Filter DIY

Here's some pictures of my filter. What needs to be said: This idea is absolutely great!! Big thanks to Thay Nghia who made a video of his build!! I love it not having to use any electronics, motors or what-soever. Just use your pump-flow. I've used some scrap 10mm plexiglass for the housing...

    Pond Filter DIY

It's been a while, but thought I do a quick update on the filter. Found this video of Thay Nghia from Vietnam to build a drum-screen filter driven by water flow. It's very easy to build and works wonders on the pond-water. I've pretty much followed it except for the inside, where I made some...

    Pond Filter DIY

Did a bit of cleaning yesterday on the filter. Over time, there's some gunk getting into the filterfloss below the sieve. Takes only a couple of minutes, 2 screws to remove, fold the sieve back, take the floss out and rinse the gunk out of it. Put everything back and start the pump again. 20...

    Pond Filter DIY

Thanks FishDance, enjoying the feedback and suggestions. The Mosquito netting is interesting, never thought about that, something to try sure. Filter is working nicely right now, with daily spray cleaning the mesh, but it's worth it trying the mosquito net to get continuous water evenly flow...

Here's some pictures of the modified setup. 3 crates with media. 2 full with bio balls, 1 with ceramic rolls. And a nice steady stream of water.. Cheers, Luc

    Pond Filter DIY

I thought about it a bit. It's actually very easy to have internal overflows, without 'spoiling' the outside looks and shape. Take a PVC reducer where the smaller diameter can handle the flow of the pump. Drill a hole in the crate's bottom that snuggly fits that smaller diameter and stick the...

    Pond Filter DIY

Just to add, I did not only reference this to the 2 outlets. I also lifted the crates and/or looked through the 'handgrips/sight openings' to see where the water was coming down through the many holes I drilled. Water came down mostly through the holes at the lower end of the sieve initially...

    Pond Filter DIY

Well, let's just start with the basics already... What I noticed is that with the 300 micron sieve-net, water is flowing over it rather fast. This means that most water ends up at one side of the filter, not something you want. It was easy to see with the outlet close to the lower end of the...

No overflows, but something to consider. Did get two more crate, higher than these. Will play around with them the coming weekend

    Pond Filter DIY

Thanks for the reply Esoxlucius.. The sieve indeed takes out loads of solids. Did get problems yesterday though. Due to its 300micron size, it clogs up easily. What happens is, the fines start clogging the sieve and water runs over it instead of through it. It's not a big problem, simply...

    Pond Filter DIY

Finished up most of the remaining work on the pond. Smaller pump outlet, capturing more of the width of the sieve. Works much better in flushing down the gunk. And can even see the fish..!! The pump is now picking up water from the far end of the pond

    Pond Filter DIY

Just to add, took about 5 hours to get everything assembled and installed. So far, lots of gunk on top the sieve, so I'm very curious how it looks tomorrow morning. The sieve curls up at the sides, which is nice as it keeps the gunk on top of the sieve and floating down. Cost: Crates: 28 USD...

    Pond Filter DIY

After getting the pond running at my brother's house, though not 100% complete yet, I decided to start a long overdue filter upgrade for my small pond at home. The pond is about 1.30m deep, 2m long and 1 meter wide. It had one of those blue barrels, filled with bio-balls and it was a pain in the...

    The Pond...

Bit of an update: Leaking! Levels in the filter/sump dropped unusually fast, and after 2 days, the left side front showed wet spots at the lower beam. I moved the pump from the sump into the main pond to check if it was maybe one of the bulkheads, but the leaking stopped once the water levelled...

    The Fly River turtle biotope!!

They absolutely are amazing to watch. How they fly around in the water, almost like an eagle in slow motion. Beautiful creatures. I'm sure you're going to spend lots of happy hours just sitting in front of the tank watching them.. Enjoy!

    The Fly River turtle biotope!!

That’s the smaller one. They’re quite naughty, chasing the smaller RTC which is about twice their size. Eat pellets and shrimp
