When I'm able to start the pond up again I think I'll go to a cartridge filter like you have in front of the bead filter and just use the bead filter for fines or replace the beads with bio.
We are finally we getting decent rain...5 inches and counting over the last 2 days. Now if the rest of...
Last winter was very cold here and I let the temp drop to 64F. No problems with any of the tropicals...cichlid's(SA & African), cats (rtc/tsn/plecos), various barbs/sharks. They all stayed active and continued to eat in the mid 60's.
Sorry for no updates but there's nothing good to report. The drought rages on here and my well could no longer keep up with backwashing the filter so I had no choice but to rehome the fish and shut down the pond . A huge amount of chlorine later and I have a swimming pool again. All of the...
I like target shooting on my property. My favorite is with my Henry lever action 22. I find it more fun than a semi automatic and it has an old west feel. I don't do it much now since 22lr ammo is so hard to find and ridiculously expensive. Hopefully someday all the preppers will realize the...
Some people use the clear solar pool covers instead of the greenhouse film. It's cheaper than greenhouse film and they say it works just as well.

Just don't float it directly on the water like you would with a pool.
The floating solar pads won't do much...tried them.
I just cover my pond with solar greenhouse film over pvc frames...
If you have plenty of sunny weather during the winter I think you can expect at least a 10 degree increase from covering it, probably more.
I just got some Kenzen pellets, sinking and floating. Seems like good stuff, 49% protein and great ingredient list.
Not the cheapest pellets around but sure beats those carnisticks & massivore.

If you give them enough room rtc's are quite active. Then again, unwanted rtc's are a dime a dozen so just give him the most space you can manage. He'll be better off with you than ending up in another 55 gallon aquarium.
I don't know too much about their temperature tolerance. I read they are a migratory fish from the northern mekong so I'm guessing they can't take too low of a temperature.
Last night I saw one of the LFS had Dolphin Barbs on their online stocklist for $5.98 each. So I drove over today and they looked like the real deal so I bought all 7 of them. Then the guy dropped one on the ground, it looked fine but he felt bad and gave them all to me for $4.49 a piece...man I...
Picked up these guys I stumbled across at an LFS. They are Dolphin Barbs (Bangana behri).
Here's a pic of an adult...
Not too shabby for $4.49 a piece :).
My rtc's don't seem to go after the other fish. I think if there is enough space and they are fed well the risk of predation is small, not zero though. The rtc/tsn is a different story, he's always trying to sneak up on the smaller fish.
Thanks. I don't track the temperature anymore so I don't have a graph to put up. With the pool covered with greenhouse film the water temp will only drop about 2 degrees/day even in below freezing temps. So I just watch the forecast and decide if I need to warm the pond up with the wood burning...
The water is still not quite clear enough for a good video but I tried to take one anyway. You can get glimpses of my cigar sharks and phoenix barbs...
