I only fed Swai once, hated the mess. Just spend a lil' more $$ for tilapia. Also, the 2-3" smelt are cheap, just chop them into a few chunks.

I do it all the time. I cut 2lbs of tilapia, refreeze and use over a week plus. And I do it with shrimp and tilapia when I go on vacation.

So is all your media submerged media with small pores plus the spongey stuff you added? If so, my guess is your actual problem is that most of the media isn't getting much water flow - the water will be making contact with the outside layers of media but barely getting to the innermost...
