I would run sponge filters on your smaller centralized tanks. You use less electricity.. you won't spread disease.. allowing you to only have to treat the tanks that need treated. I have a racking system in my home, and I use sponge filters on them. It's been a life saver for a lot of my fish...

Don't worry about it man.. I can't make an auto water change system either. Water changes take up a good chunk of my time as well. I also know that from having so many tanks.. some fish become more appealing, and then the less appealing tanks end up getting the slack on them. :(
