They do eat plants. I much prefer my Rabbit Snails (which also eat plants if not well-fed). If you're looking for Rabbit Snails, I recommend Bob's tropical Plants.

An infestation waiting to happen! I've never had a problem with the duckweed. I grow it in my pond. I'll take a handful and drop it in every tank. The turtles love it, and the rainbows devour it, so it never takes hold in the tanks.
