    keeping koi in cold weather?

Hi Dmopar74, I don't live far from Funkytown, I'm in Tacoma. As noted in the other postings, koi and goldfish will do well in the outdoor ponds over the winter. I have had cheep gold fish incapsulated in the center of a bubble of water in the center of the ice for several months thinking that...

Do hardy water lilies need a dormant period?

I have to assume that you your lilies indoors. I can't answer your question about if they need a dormant period or not, but mine seem to do quite well in my back yard pond all year around. I'm in Tacoma, WA, and we may get temps dowm into the teens F from time to time. I have never grown...

How do u guys do it?/New Pond idea..

I would imagine that you have to use your heater almost all year long to keep your pond water 'at' 70* F. Even at night in the summer don't the temps there drop below 70* F? Happy ponding, Rich ;)

what to do if it rains?

Thanks muski, My yard is about one foot of top soil and rocky sand below that. Our water run off is good, but I like your idea. I'll put the dry well about four to five feet out from the pond near a flower bed. Thanks for the great suggestion. Happy ponding, Rich :grinyes:

what to do if it rains?

Hi Muski, Thanks for the suggestion. That's what I thought about doing except I have a 18 gallon attached reservor next my pond that serves as a skimmer/pre-filter, and it is at the same water level as the pond. I'm leaning toward putting the overflow on the side of the reservor. My yard is...

    Cichlids in ponds

I live in Tacoma, WA, and I have always thought it would be cool to have a large and deep enough pond to have cichlids in it. I have raised large tiger oscars years ago and they always got too big for my limited aqauriums. A 500 gallon or bigger pond would be awsome for oscars. Like Iowa, the...

what to do if it rains?

Think about all of the natural ponds around the world. Usually they have a water source to fill it, be it rain, an inlet stream, or an unground spring. Usually there is a overflow somewhere at a low end of that pond. Your man made pond isn't much different, except you control the enviroment...

    Pond suggestions?

Muni, Thank you for sharing the pics of your pond. I have always dreamed of owning a piece of property with a natural year round pond on it or a stream running through it. My imagination goes wild thinking about the possibilities. Please keep us posted. I'm out here in Tacoma. Happy...

    terribal alagea

Algae growth is natural and no matter what you do you will have algae when your pond is exposed to any kind of light. I found that by having my pond heavely planted with lilies, water hyacinth, and water lettuce, the algae growth is minimized. I also have Japanese live bearing trap door...

How to clean a planted tank??

I have a 55 gallon octigon tank in my office at home. It is heavely planted in about three fingers of washed river sand, and some substrate decorations. No filter, 80watt heater, and grow lights. It has been set up now for about three years, and all I have done is partial (25%) water change...

what to do if it rains?

I have had to scoop out water in my pond with a four gallon bucket. I like the idea of installing a over flow at my low end of the pond. Happy ponding, Rich
