Bichir has fishing line stuck in the gills

Didn’t have to touch the fish at all. The line was not in its gills as it appeared. It was wrapped around its neck and it was relatively loose. I was able to get a pair of scissors in and snip it off.

Thanks. You don’t think I’d need to drug the fish? I don’t want to...

Bichir has fishing line stuck in the gills

I think my fish ate fishing line and tried to expel it from the gills. And now it’s stuck. I tried to get a better pic, but this is the best I can do. I’m not sure if I should just wait and see what happens or try and remove it. Before you ask, the fishing line was used years ago in this...

I finally got a good pic of the ghost next to the ornate.

    Cb ansorgii?

one of my issues is the bgk is a really quick eater and eats most of the bichirs food. I think since the bgk is nocturnal it can escape the bichirs if the get hungry. I’ll monitor the situation.

    Cb ansorgii?

Bgk is about 12 inches. The big tank has a large ornate that I’m concerned about. Around 22 inches. The other concern is the red tail giant gourami which is also about 22 inches. Also Two other smaller bichirs i am not concerned about. I went ahead and put the bgk in the large tank and...

    Cb ansorgii?

Now I just need to figure out what to do with the black ghost knife while I grow him out. Keep the ghost life in there, move to the big tank or set up a temporary tank.

    Cb ansorgii?

Picked one up. This one was in a separate tank and a little bigger than the rest. Also had less of a froggy looking face. Hopefully I don’t see the slow growth otters have talked about.

Maybe the same lfs. I didn’t think they looked that bad on Sunday but I just didn’t have time to really look at them.

    Cb ansorgii?

I wonder why the slow growth? Thanks for the info. I’ll try to get back to the lfs this week and pick one up. Or at least get a pic.

    Cb ansorgii?

At the fish store today they had about 40 fish labeled ansorgii Bichir. I didn’t think to take a pic until I left and they were closing the store as I was leaving. They were tiny, maybe 3 inches long. I didn’t know these were bred in captivity. I’ll have to go back and maybe buy one. Has...

    Bulge in stomach

Sorry at least one more post. I was going through my old posts to find old pics of the Bichir and I found something probably unrelated but interesting. This same fish had eaten a plastic plant five years ago. Could that be the cause? It just took five years to surface?

    Bulge in stomach

One final reply to this thread. The fish passed today. She never recovered and the bloat/tumor/ whatever never went away. I had her for about 7 years.

    Bulge in stomach

For the purpose of helping others with this issue, I am posting another update. Nothing I tried worked and the fish did not eat anything the entire time in quarantine. I treated with epsom salt for 5 weeks and even without eating, the bulge has not gone down. However the fish does look...

    Bulge in stomach

logically I can't see it being parasites. i haven't added anything to the tank in years and i don't feed anything live. and if it is parasites i'd have to treat the main tank. I do have some prazipro and tetra parasite guard on hand from a bichir worm outbreak a few years ago. i might give...

    Bulge in stomach

Update on my fish: The fish has been in quarantine for a month now. I have not seen any improvement. I have been treating with epsom salt and changing the water every other day. She did poop once while in quarantine but has not taken any food. I’m not sure if I should keep at it or try...
