Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

That would be a florida gar. Colour may change as it continues to grow. In the past there have been juvenile gars that display red or gold pigment and changes to standard colouration with growth.

    Will the tail fin heal?

Right down to the body like that, in my experience it is unlikely that it will heal properly. It is likely to remain with a split in it.

Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

Great to hear. I kinda started over the weekend but I changed my mind on format so it’s still a work in progress. Quick question for you though. I was going to try and use mainly pictures from the existing stickies. If I need additional ones from the web though, provided I state the picture is...

Help pls. My gar has lumps on its body. What should i do?

Raised temps are likely to help a little bit in clearing it up. In the past when I have had gars with it salt did not seem to do anything. It wouldn’t hurt though either.

Help pls. My gar has lumps on its body. What should i do?

It looks kinda like lymphocystis. A viral infection that fish can get. Typically it would present on or near the fins of the fish though, a patch on the body is not as common. Even so, this is what I believe your fish have. Being a viral infection lymphocystis has to work it’s way through the...

    Spotted Gar issue please help.

Are you able to post a video of it swimming? It sounds like it might be a spiral valve infection. Treatment for this would be tetracycline.

    UPDATE on '7x2x2'......now getting...8×2.5×3

If your thinking peacock bass, they should go well with some of fish towards the bottom of your list. The polys, fire eel, catfish. I personally don't like the combo of gars with peacock bass or other cichids. In many cases this results in a dead or maimed gar.

One gar with like size koi

There was a poster @HungDang that used to keep some wild caught spotted gars with koi. From what I remember he did not have any issues from the setup. The gars were on the larger size, as I believe the koi were. He maintained them in a larger outdoor setup. I would just watch that the gar is...

    UPDATE on '7x2x2'......now getting...8×2.5×3

This stock list is not likely to work long term. I would recommend either a cichlids community or a predator community. In a mixed setup like this you will likely have some aggression from the cichlids towards the more passive fish.

Will my fish work with a planted tank?

Given what your describing here what I personally would do is track down some potted plants. These will have more established roots already and will likely stay planted easier even with the fish disturbing them. For background plants I would be considering swords, crinums, crypt balansae and...

Will my fish work with a planted tank?

I've seen guys do a carpet of crypt wendtii before. A lot hardier and easier to grow than some other plants. Might grow a little taller than what your looking for though.

Will my fish work with a planted tank?

I have had eel and bichirs in well planted tanks before. I found the key was to have the plants already be well established before the fish were added.

Can anyone what size tank I need?

If the op is the same ashdavid that used to post on some of the old forums, then this is likely a joke. Had a crazy collection back in the day, and probably still does.

Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

It's a good starting point, but there are definitely more things you can look at to generate an id. I'm thinking I'll try and throw together a full write up with pics to demonstrate. I believe some of the old links and pictures in the stickies no longer work.

Where can I get a long nose gar?

You could always try fishing for them if they are native around you. I would double check on the legality though.

Florida gars rubbing against each other ????

This is pretty normal behaviour with gars kept in groups. It a sort of dominance display between the fish. Worst I have had happen is some shredded fins that usually heal up in no time. couple also be breeding behaviour, but given how rare this is in captivity it is not likely.

    Gar advice needed

Based on the limited information my best guess is that one of the cichlids is stressing out the gar.
