    Looks male to me, give him time to grow another inch or two and it'll be easier. And if I'm not mistaking they're Calico not Marbled.

    My 2" female has blue most of the time but when shes in breeding colors it's a different story. So yes it's normal.

    I don't know about combining them, when I had my pair of Rams (German Blue) they acted like Convicts to everything else in the tank for some reason. Also I've heard that they aren't good parents but I'm not positive since my Rams eggs disappeared... lol

    It's not really you it's the 40G, if you can upgrade your options WIDELY open.

    Maybe one pair of Yellow Labs? My LFS is looking for a breeding to buy juvies at $3 each... Apart from what you've been describing your only choice IMO is a pair of convicts..
