    Salvini hybrids

I can't argue with you, ehh!!! They are beautiful, but my idea isn't to change the salvini; just to steal their red!!

    Salvini hybrids

Well, all, I am back at the cichlids! Been working on anabantids for the last 3 years but now back at my true love; CA's! I have the crazy notion of adding the red found on a Salvini to the blue of an EBJD! Kinda like the photoshopped avatar I have. I fully understand the EBJD breeding...

Using grey Portland cement for fake rocks ?

I think the epoxy will adhere better if the concrete is 90% cured and the rule of thumb for that is 30 days.

    fish cycling or fishless cycling...

Hate to bring facts in to the mix, but it is a long-lasting myth that plants use ammonia. They don't. They use nitrate. However, your approach is good in bringing surfaces covered in bacteria into the new tank. I always cycle with ammonia, not fish. However, I am currently in a stuck...

    Custom Siphon System

I have seen a BUNCH of syphon ideas and tried several of them with less than great success. So...here's is a schematic rendering of the system I ended up with. A = main tank with dark blue line as the water surface B = 10 gallon tank INSIDE the main tank C = undergravel filter with lift tubes...

The Funny Farm (New Fishroom Continued...) Discus and EBJD

Theoretically, assuming the blue gene is a simple recessive...you should get 50/50 or a 1:1 ratio of blue babies from BG x EB. I am very interested in the genetics of this, so hope you post some results!!

    Freshwater Refugium

Thought I would throw my 10 cents worth in here. I put a 10g inside of my 220g, for several purposes; it is the intake diffuser for my sump, water flows over the top through a homemade grill down through gravel into an UG filter then up the lift tubes into the siphon. It is my baby tank...

    220g ply/epoxy

Drey....don't fret too much, still have a Rainbow, Salvini, Firemouth and EBJD coming this weekend! So far all is well with the Peacocks, but mostly all young fish though. Andrew, again thanks for the A. nyassae... can't wait for them to color up. The baenshi's are just now starting to get a...

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

No links. Working from memory in old genetics books. I didn't read your link and didn't even read the whole link I posted. Not really the point of this thread, just an interesting aside. I know the Poeciliidae have some unusual genetic structures.

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

Yea, I know of that phenomena. Very rare. Don't think the gene pool of a population will be effected ! I only know of one confirmed case in humans; happened in Germany during WWII. It is essentially a female animal cloning herself. Offspring will always be female.

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

Ok, this one was just too absurd to pass up! No wonder we are unable to win an argument; the opposition are truly half-wits. "When a pair of freshwater fish species reproduce together, they create hybrids who are able to reproduce asexually. This ability should offer the hybrids an...

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

Tiger Muskie. Tiger muskie are the bad boys of freshwater sport fish. They get big and mean and have nasty dispositions. Catching a big tiger is an exciting event and a milestone that fishermen brag about. A hybrid cross between muskellunge and northern pike, the tiger muskie exhibits...

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

Splake Trout. The splake has been in production since the early 1870's. Reproduction has only occurred and been documented in hatcheries. Splake have been introduced into a variety of waters in the U.S. and Canada over the past 100 years. Even with such a large distribution, there is no credible...

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

How about some hybrid fish success stories; Hybrid Bluegill. This fish is the number one stocked sport fish today. The Hybrid Bluegill is crossed between a male bluegill and female green sunfish. This particular cross produces a fish with the large mouth of the sunfish and the aggressiveness...

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

Noted upstream that some hybrids and some wild releases (accidental and intentional) go awry. True. But without the experimentation that created that problem, we would all be living in the stone age. It's the cost of development. Here in Iowa we have an introduced wild rose called multiflora...

    Speciation: Historic, Contemporary & Ideological

Xenophobia seems to be the only explanation. I can't comprehend the mindsets of people who are so militaristically against hybrids. I tend to think it's ignorance, simply because it is beyond my understanding. Just gonna brain storm here....here is a list of inter-species hybrids that most...
