What's New This Week At GFC!

Just a heads up that the “ornatus cichlid” pictured looks like Mesheros ornatus, which are from Colombia/Ecuador, not Protomelus ornatus, which are from Malawi (as mentioned in the description).

    LFS recommendations in London

Any UK-based MFKers have suggestions if any aquarium stores worth visiting in London (ideally accessible without a car, I.e., via the underground)?

Paludarium for Archer and Lizards ???

If you go with Toxotes blythii or even microlepis they’d be fine in full freshwater. Your proposed enclosure sounds large enough for a Chinese or Australian water dragon, both of which do well in fairly high humidity enclosures as long as you have good airflow. There are also even more...

    New additions: Etroplus canarensis

They do well with a veggie-heavy diet and mostly graze on biofilms in the wild, so I’m trying to replicate this with some repashy soilent green. https://youtube.com/shorts/z5EGX9tR_eA?si=tBVe6GCr_zf1eX3g

    Strawberry

I’ve heard that these are pretty peaceful and not nippy, unlike most of the other leporinus - has that been your experience?

    New additions: Etroplus canarensis

Finally managed to acquire one of my bucket-list fish: Etroplus canarensis. It’s a pretty rare cichlid endemic to south Karnataka in India, where it is unfortunately endangered in its natural habitat. I first saw some in an LFS in Thailand in 2019 and have been looking for some ever since. I...

Long, low and narrow tank glass thickness

You might still want to consider the bottom eurobrace I suggested in my earlier post. This would mean running the 4” strips along the inside of the front/back at the bottom. This effectively gives you double the bonding area and double the tensile strength, and since it’s at the bottom it...

Long, low and narrow tank glass thickness

Agree that 1/2” should be fine. The outward outward deflection of the front/back panes of glass typically puts the greatest strain at the center, and this exacerbated on very long tanks. Eurobracing at the top (or the bottom if you want to go for the rimless look) resists the bowing and helps to...

    PVC sheets for DIY aquarium?

Has anyone tried building a tank out of PVC sheets instead of plywood? E.g., https://www.homedepot.com/p/1-2-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-White-PVC-Sheet-Panel-190360/205079515

    Archerfish identi

Agree - looks like microlepis to me (based on the irregular bars and the two well-separated dots at the rear edge of the dorsal fin)

Thought it was ich but they keep dying 😔

It looks like epistylis to me. I sadly also lost a bunch of clown loaches to it last year when I misdiagnosed it as ich. I had been treating with coppersafe and Ich-X for over 2 weeks with no improvement before I concluded it wasn’t ich. If it is epistylis, then an effective treatment is...

Thanks - stock list is: 8 x Toxotes blythii (clouded archers) 7 x Haludaria fasciata (panda barbs) - had a lot more of these but they have a tendency to jump out 2 x Xenomystus nigri (african brown knifefish) - these guys are over 10 years old! 3 x Pelvicachromis kribensis "bipindi" 6 x...

    150g dripwall build

Thanks! That plant is Ficus pumila ‘Quercifllia’ aka oak-leaf creeping fig. I find it does really well under drip wall conditions. It’s not as aggressive as regular creeping fig but it can still take over if you don’t manage it. I’ve got another paludarium that’s totally over-run with it.
