How many animals is too many animals?

I simply mean low stock, over filtered. I still do water changes 2x a week but if I end up in the hospital, an fx6 on a 125 or 75 will pick up the slack and keep water quality acceptable. Live plants like pothos will also help keep nitrates down. It always gets brought up how to do minimal...

How many animals is too many animals?

I currently have 6 tanks running, plans to set up 2 or 3 more and have 3 reptiles with plans of 1 or 2 more. My comfort level: can everything still be maintained if I get sick/disabled or lose my job. I travel allot for work and if my current tanks can't be maintained for a week or two by my...

    Marine Bio colleges

If you want to work with gars, look at fisheries biology. There are plenty of schools that focus on fisheries and or marine. My major in college was aquaculture and fisheries biology. I learned very little about marine sciences but the focused major gave me allot of tools and knowledge to get a...

My Mom Wants a Community of Colourful Fish (HELP)

Personally I would sit down with her and look through fish on a site like liveaquaria or petsolutions to get a better idea of what she likes. Many times I've had people simply wanting colorful fish get excited about "unusual" fish like apistos. An interesting pattern, body shape etc can go a...

    Culled goldfish

At that size, most predatory fish would do the job. So then tank size considerations would be your biggest limiting factor. If you are looking to trade or sell down the road, stick to colorful and or unusual species. The more aggressive they are, the harder it will be to give away since not...

Making sure Pleco's get enough Food

Impressive, most of the time a large chunk like that gets spit out as an insulting mistake

Making sure Pleco's get enough Food

Well I also use pvc pipe to target pellets into caves instead of putting my hands into the tank. I second the grow your own algae idea. If your fish are destroying veggies, growing your own might be a good idea. The plecos shouldn't have competition with that. You could also try something...

Small monster for a small tank?

Many people do give 75 as the minimum for fire eels but they do have a slow growth rate. I've seen some large eels in captivity but nothing massive. I should state a fire eel will probably need to be upgraded down the road. My current fire eel has grown 6 inches in the last year in my 125 and...

Small monster for a small tank?

Senegal bichirs would be fine, mine were aggressive enough to chase down minnows but never harassed anything that wasn't easily swallowed. Belly crawler pikes are a dwarf species and would do fine. I had a gorgeous female in a 55 for years. Fire eels and the like have a ton of personality...

Making sure Pleco's get enough Food

I feed a variety of veggies in my large mixed species tank. Only a few compete with the plecos for veggies and the plecos move in much faster and scarf down food. Why would using zucchini not be acceptable?

    bristlenose babies

I ignore them on occasion, before I combined my shrimp tank into this one I tried feeding the shrimp to the tetras. They chased them for a second but gave up pretty quickly. Since then the moss and other plants filled in and survival has really increased.

    bristlenose babies

The shrimp ignore them but quickly scavenge any baby that doesn't make it. They don't fan the eggs, the male was quite protective and didn't even let shrimp get too close to the eggs. Since setting this tank up, combining different tanks, the shrimp population has tripled. Even the tetras ignore...

    bristlenose babies

I've been watching my big male fanning his cave for a while. Finally he moved out and tiny babies have left to explore the tank. The camera wouldn't focus on their tiny bodies.

    Feeder Goldfish as Pets

Depends on a few variables, especially your food. Ime they usually change colors over time based on diet. Vary your food and use natural and frozen foods with whatever staple you choose
