firemouth cichlid spawn vent anus

I have a pair of firemouths that I was hoping would spawn when they got bigger (they are only 2"-3"). Today I noticed they each have a small spike looking thing where there anus is, the male especially. Is this something that happens when they are going to spawn or is this something else...
