I thought this was a throw away shot until i opened it up and realized how cool it was! shot this wide open at f/2.8 and under natural light for the narrow depth of field :)

it's not really a 'border' per say, its the effect you get when using a wide aperture on a DSLR lens. youll notice that only a small sliver of the picture is in focus, from left to right. as soon as you pass the focal plane, it goes out of focus. this is because i shot using an aperture of f/2.8. if i used someting like an f/11 or smaller, then the entire image would have been in focus.

Is that same in photos that have a shadowed effect, where the center of the photo is clear but the edge of the pic is dark and shadowed.......

I think you are talking about Vignette.
