a coworker asked me yeterday if i could help him out. he has a 1/2 acre pond thats about 5"deep in the deepest and for the most part round. it is in a wooded area and about 150' from a creek. he says the rain will fill it but it dried up everytime.

we filled my uncles pond with decaying leaves and that sealed his pond but my coworker said its full of leaves

anyone with ideas other than buying a liner?

Talk to an engineer about using clay. You make a clay slurry and pump it into the water and it will coat the bottom, apparently preferentially in areas of leakage. For larger things like this or dams or golf-courses this tends to be the method.

5" at the deepest ? that may have been the cause of evaporation..

Body of water evaporates, the deeper the water, the lesser you'll notice

Tell him the next time it dries up to start digging.
