2 years old?
For me the short tail has better look and nicer with age, the long tail one become too heavy cause all the extra weight from their long tail, fins. Do you trick him to react with your finger tip on the glass? (like it gonna fight with another male betta)
yeah ive had him about 18m and he was already grown so im guessing he is close to 3yrs by now!-) will be sad when he does go, even considering my monster fish he is one of my faves, yes when i tap the glass with my nail he comes out to be fed. he is loving the pothos and has started a nice bubble nest around it now. ive tried to breed him but he has always fought with my female double tail.
If you introduce a female into his tank directly then 99% it will fail. You will need in tank box to keep the female there, the key here is that you have to watch out for color change on the female betta belly, when it turn yellowish then her eggs is ready and the male will accept her other than that you looking for a dead female if she's not ready to spawn.
