I stopped into an LFS that I pass by whenever I visit home buy have never checked out (they had a "Freshwater fish: Buy one get one FREE!" sign in their window). As with most LFS, most of their stock consisted of livebearers, goldfish, and tetras with a limited selection of tetras.

I didn't see anything that I particularly liked (or wouldn't immediately be gobbled up by my tanks' current inhabitants) aside from a convict with barely any stripes, but 3 huge spots on each side, LEMON yellow fins, a flourescent blue chin, a bright orange belly AND trailers. I understand that this kind of enthuism about a convict may seem to be in excess, but it was really, really pretty and for $2, why not? :)

I didn't see a darned thing else that I wanted to get, but it was buy one get one... so I asked the employee to bag the other fish that, although clearly not a convict, was labled as such.

After spending almost an hour trying to get a decent shot to identify this mystery fish, I discovered my camera's data cable had shorted out. After doing a google search for "cichlid" and sifting through the pictures for something that look as close as possible to my new fish, I came up with these and am now pretty sure it's a black belt cichlid:

I've never seen one in a fish store nor have I seen them for sale by any online fish retailers. How common are these guys and what do they normally go for? He's somewhere between 2" and 3" right now.

sweet convict score looking forward to pics

not very common and in TO usually go for 25-40 dollars

Wow, really? Even at that small size?

So I guess for $1 (or free, however you look at it), he was a steal?

Has/does anyone else own one of these? What's their growth rate like? I've read they get to ~12" and was hoping he wouldn't be too close to that size before April-May of 2010 (when I will finally get my 300g). The largest tank I have currently is my 180g, but it's inhabitants will soon be due for an upgrade also. He's in a 29g quarantine tank right now.

Thanks :) I thought that when I saw the little guy/girl. The colors were just so bright and were what drew my attention in the first place against the black gravel of the store tank. Cons are normally easy to sex, but this one is confusing me with it's bright belly and it's long fins, lol.

blackbelts are not commonly seen at fish stores, but can be acquired for very reasonable prices elsewhere. Very common and widespread in the wild from what I've read.

hmmmmm I see a problem in your future. If he's a black belt hes gonna beat up all your other fish. Better get them all to the dojo for training!

that's a pretty broad statement, that could very well depend on the tankmates too

Sometime within the next 3-6 months I will be getting a 300g which will house some salvini, cons, and probably my two oscars if I decide to sell the 180g after upgrading. I'm pretty sure both he and they will be able to hold their own in the tank :)

If not... he can live by himself in the 180g. Based on photos of adult fish that I've seen, I think they are beautiful and would make a nice single wet pet.

Here is my chunky female con with long trailers. I really should breed her.
