1 inch per gallon is so stupid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LOL! if that was true, an OSCAR could fit in a 15 gallon :D

But, i AGREE, the rule is a BASIC rule of thumb for beginners... And, it COULD work with SOME fish... (ex. 10 guppies in 10 gallon...) But, for experianced keepers like us, ....... Nope.

It's not meant to be literally, it's general guideline. And it's not based solely on the length of the fish. I believe it's length x height of the fish. So if you have a fish that's 8" long x 4" high that would be 32", requiring 32 gallons.

I have never been to a fishroom where the 1 inch per rule is applied to...I would say there is a few true north followers...but lets not go there with them...lol

It's more for things like tetras.
It doesn't apply to: anything over 3-4", shrimp, or small fish with large bioload.

Guess I haven't followed that rule in many yrs. IMO, as long as the fish hav enough room to roam, and tank has adequate filtration to support the bio-load of stock, it's all good
