My 1,5/2 inches firemouth chews at the 1mm NLS pellets I feed it and pollute my water by expelling it by its gills. I know it is a sign that the pellets are too big for it to swallow but it pisses me of because he used to swallow them all; even my 1 inch convict eats them without mess !

Are the 1mm pellets really to big for a 2 inches firemouth or is it just a fussy fish. I don't want to buy .5mm NLS since I already have tons of 1mm.

The only thing that changed between the moment it swallowed the pellets and the moment it began to chew them is the temp; it is a damn hot week in here. Could it be the high temp (28/29C) ?

My 2" festae eat 2mm without any kind of mess, they used to eat 1mm at .5" and never made a mess either.

I use it on 1.5" rams with no problem. Sometimes they have small peices come out of their gills but only if they grab a few pellets at once, otherwise no waste at all.

my dwarfs which are about 1'' have no problem eating 1mm. im guessin just a fussy fish.

Some fish are just messy eaters no matter how big or small the pellet....Jagaur's come to mind when I say that but there's plenty others. Never owned firemouths.

My 2 in EBJD does the same but consumes the same size hikari pellets just fine. Probably just picky about what it eats.
