I am a beginner and have a 10g. I want a cheap African species that can last a few hours in a critter carrier.

I want to bring it for a school project and then move it back it to its home

Hands down African dwarf frog!
One of the most fun aquatic organisms I’ve ever kept, and one of the easiest (if not the easiest). Only thing of concern is the petsmart/petco ones are notoriously unhealthy and don’t last longer than a few months. I had the most success with the toy store ones lol

Most terrestrial reptiles and amphibians that I know of would probably appreciate more than 10 gallons, at least the African ones.

I have a giant day, and he’s just that, giant. He’s in an 18 x 18 x 24, I wouldn’t do less than 16x16x24 for the smaller day geckos, I personally find the 12 inch wide cages too small for most lizards.
With a 10 gallon dimensions, you are limited to more terrestrial lizards.

What about a type of day gecko?
Day geckos are a type of arboreal gecko. They spend time in the trees and rarely touch the ground. I would not recommend a day gecko for as you describe because you can make them burst, they are the worst species ever to handle. I would recommend in a 10 gallon something like a terrestrial frog, or a gecko such as an african fat tailed gecko,

Lol forgot about the escape artist bit…my giant day got calmer with age.
When I bought him the petsmart employee had said that this one had gotten out a lot…
He’s escaped twice on me…first time he was hiding on a tree that I took out. Second time he flat out jumped on me to get out lol. Pretty easy to catch with a small Tupperware and piece of paper.
When he runs on the styrofoam wall in the back he is scary loud…
But such a beautiful lizard that I can forgive it all!
