So I got a 10 gallon I am thinking of getting a filter for and setting up. I want something easy, but still cool to look at. I want a few fish in there, stuff that wont out grow the tank in a year or maybe ever...

I need some fish and filter suggestions. I am thinking a simple HOB filter.

If I could do something without a heater that would be cool, but I know there are not many options for that. I dont want just guppies or mollies or platys or something. Are there are good looking fish that stay at a small enough size to have 5 or so in a 10g?

Also, for a light I would take some suggestions. The room is always dark pretty much, little light at all, thats why its the bedroom! So could I get away with just a dim blueish light? Reading on here I seem to gather that the fish dont even really care about the light, so a low blue is only going in for a little bit of "mood light" is ya know what I am saying ;)

I would also consider tossing in a single snail or something to help keep the place clean...

What I really dont want to happen is go out and get some small fish and then find out I could have gotten something really cool, so def open to any and all suggestions!

You could always try shell-dwellers (shellies). Try googling them to see what info you can find on them. I think someone on here is selling some in the classifieds section.
I've never tried shellies before, but would love to someday!

*EDIT* - Actually, someone's selling the shellies on aquariacentral.com. They're called multies.

boo whispers! J/k. They work, but AquaClears are the best HOB IMO. The way the filter media compartment is set-up it is much more efficient.

if you're going with a 10g (and shellies) I would go for brevis. The pairs stay in the same shell and they defend a smaller territory than most shellies. You can house 2 pairs in a 10g.

Get some dwarf shrimp and a hydro II sponge filter. You can get one for around $10 shipped and it will work better than any HOB you would usually buy for a 10 gal.

i think some neon tetras and black neon tetras would look cool in a small tank. in fact i have been thinking of redoing my 30 gallon with them.
