I had a 33 gallon sump all cycled and mature media inside, filled it, and slid it in my tank only to find that I didn't have enough room above the sump for my plumbing!

So the only other tank I had lying around was a 10 gallon.
I'm using the 10 gallon as the sump and filling stacked plastic drawer with media (5 drawers) and putting about 40-50 scrubbies in the sump.

My bio load is coming from 4 - 4" piranhas, so not a huge amount of waste for this tank.

Will I be alright with this 10 gallon sump?
I have a 900 GPH pump on the output, so it's got a lot of flow through it.

Should I be looking to invest in a cannister sooner rather than later?

I have a 10G sump for my overcrowded 90G. It depends on what your using the sump for? If it's strictly for biological filtration , then it's sufficient. If used for mechanical filtration, then you would need to have few powerheads that will keep the debri off the substrate. Just make sure your sump will be able to accomodate all the water that drains after a power outage. To test it , simply unplug ur pump and see if ur sump carries all the water.

im gonna setup a 55g sump for my 180......extra filtration never hurts.

Id get atleast a 20 long for your 90.

Alright.
I am thinking of keeping this ten gallon and getting a smaller canister also.

Probably a Fluval 305 or Eheim ecco 2234. Maybe an XP2?

Once the power turns back on, your pump will take up the extra water and it should return to normal.

You shouldn't have so much of a problem with that given that your only a 55 w/ a 20 sump.
I'm cutting it close with the 10 sump because with a 4 or 5 gallon float in it, it will drain near 5 gallons if the power goes out.
I did check it though and I'm good.

Now I need to decide on a canister, or upgrade the sump and forget the canister.
