ok im still in the proces of learning the smp thing so please bear with me lol. Ok can i use a 10 gallon tank as a sump for my 75. i figured it will hold as much media or more than the two fluval 404 i have on it now if i make the media area big enough. i will be using two 3/4 inch overflows. ive searched through the diy a got some ideas ust need them straightened out thankyou for the help

Sure, just don't overstock the 75g, pre-filter the water before it hits the bio-media, account for the water in the pipes when the pump shuts down and turn over the tank 2x.

I'd really suggest a larger sump, (lower flow rate and longer contact time in sump) but I don't your stocking intentions ;)

Keep us posted on your progress,

Dr Joe

yes it is a 75 with a male red spot gold sev and a ffemale gold sev and a flagtail , all under 3 inches ill probably actualy use a 20 gallon tank how do i pre filter the water befor it hits the sump do i use a filter sock, and ill only need 2x the turnover what size and kind of pump should i use and what do you do to keep from flooding the sump when the power gos out thankyou very much for the help

The 20g will give you a little more working room, filter socks are great ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Replacement-Pre...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 ), I put a 200m inside a 100m (finer if I can get them), just remember to clean them regularly.

A 2x turnover would mean a 180 gph pump (tank + 15g of sump), but realistically with head pressure and filter restrictions, a 250 gph @ 4ft head height will be good and still economical.

Now for some heavy reading... Overflows....

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101156

Keep in mind while pour reading that, an overflow may seem look a syphon but it's not, an over flow is exactly what it's name implies...when the pump puts water in the tank (from the sump) above the water line, it overflows back into the sump. As long as the pump is running this cycle continues.

The sticky explains why it won't backflow your tank into the sump and extra precautions.

Any question you have after reading this, just ask, just try not to over-think it. ;)
