Hey guys, Im in the process of switching from a 10 gallon tank to a 20 gallon and I just had a quick question. So if I have a 20 gallon tank and fill it half way with fresh dechlorinated water can I add all the old water from the 10 gallon aquarium to the 20 gallon and put the fish in once it's heated up? Im looking at this as if it's in a way a 50% water change but I wanted to make sure Im not doing something stupid. Thanks!

Actually, if you de-chlorinate the new water going in the 20G tank by using prime, and move your old 10G's filter over to the 20G to help seed the new filter, you should in theory be able to move all the fish at once without too much worry... since the beneficial bacteria will be in the filter, and any ornaments / substrate you move over...

So basically no need to move the old water, since all you are doing is literally moving water with ammonia and other dissolved waster that doesn't really benefit anything...

Oh ok, I thought that the putting the old filter straight into fresh dechlorinated water would kill off the bacteria growing on it. Thanks!

It would if you were to WASH it in tap / decholorinated water, since you would be physically removing the beneficial bacteria...

But by moving the filter over you are keeping everything in a closed circuit system, so any bacteria thats gets washed off gets re-built quickly
