10 most popular freshwater aquarium fish???

I'm putting together a video compilation of what I believe are the most popular freshwater aquarium fish in the hobby.

I'm basing it on commonality, demand and availability. My list consists of the following but certain species I think its a toss up between....that's where you come in

What order do you believe they should be in and is there any species that I'm missing? Give your opinion as to why and whatever seems to be the overall majority I'll go by or consider.

1. Goldfish
2. Neon and Cardinal Tetra
3. Bettas
Number 2 & 3 could be a toss up...whats your opinion?

4. Guppies (should guppies be higher? thoughts?)
5. Angelfish
6. Plecos (5 or 6th spot?)

This is where it gets tough, the last 4 spots I'm considering are for Gouramis, Cory Catfish, Oscars, Convicts, Clown Loaches and Tiger Barbs....anything that I'm missing?

That's a tough one. For hardcore fishkeepers(like on this site), it could include SA Cichlids, Arowanas, polys(sp).


For an average fishkeeper it's neons, bettas, angelfish, and barbs.


Between the two, I would not put neons at second. Nearly all the LFS don't even carry them anymore. If I wanted some, I'd have to go to a Petsmart or Petco.

I remember going to a fish store in San Antonio a few years back and over 90% of the fish were African Cichlids. I asked them why so much and hardly any of the others. He replied by saying that's about all the customers want.

But its a difficult thing to come up with. Because availability and cost is different in every area.
One mans garbage is other mans treasure lol

Glofish (even if they made up of several species) they're mighty popular.

Mollies, danios, barbs, definitely clown loaches, yellow labs, parrot fish, Oscars, and for some reason I want to say pictus cats lol

Goldfish, Gourami, Mollies, Bala Sharks, Oscar, Tinfoil Barbs, Labidochromis (electric yellow), Melanochromis (electric blue johanni), Sciaenochromis (electric blue), Clown Loach.
...beginner to advanced, all available at PetDumb and PetCrap.

platy, swordtails, r/t shark, blue gourami, gold gourami, glo-lite tetra, serpae tetra. sold a ton in my lfs days

Danios for the top 5, and mountain minnows too. I see tonnes of them sold at petsmart
