Rbp are supposed to max out at around 12" which is ibet is rare for aquariums.anyhow who has rbp 10" or bigger? What have they been fed, and the tank size.currently I have only 1 adult rbp at 10" mark. Oddly enough this rbp was fed feeders n nightcrawlers and in a 20h aquarium when I bought him at 8". In the last year he's been in a 135gal n has grown 1.5"-2". I'm really starting to think live feed is really critical for rbp to reach their potential size, since they grow so fast I think the added nutritional value of live is needed, and mostly overlooked for so called healthier, safer foods.

I can't speak for everybody in every scenario but most of the larger reds i've heard/seen on here were purchased big. I don't think it's very accurate to tell the story of that fish's life when we only know the last 2 chapter (what small amount of information the former owner told you and then the chapter you've written yourself).

To prove this theory, a controlled experiment would have to be done over and over with fry from the same batch in seperate tanks being feed the same amount of food but different types.

It IS an interesting topic though

well so far I've had my RBP's for about 7mo's....I've feed them mainly lrg goldfish, along with Hikari Carnivore pellets, but mainly goldfish and they are bigger than my friends P's...He has three 11 month old Reds, he only feeds them pellets...We both got them from the same FS...

Just kinda funny my biggest rbp should be the one with the most stunting.raised on goldfish n worms n lived in a 20gal tank. I'm gonna raise two small groups of rbp 5each tank.one tank is going to get fed nothing but live food. Tank two will get fed everything but live(including whole silversides).both tanks will get treated n be the same(waterchanges, temp, filter, size, ect).my two groups of 5 are 2" right now. When I select the 10rbp today ill photograph each fish with a ruler, ill pull each fish once a month for pic(with measurement)for 6 months.

bruner, when you talk about live food do you mean goldie or other healthier feeders?
I think you will have to use goldfish to make it count and this is going to be long term project in order to find out if there's any effect on growth from goldfish

That's a good point as my biggest n probably a lot of them were fed goldfish, but I feed rbp. Really need 3 tanks one for good feeders, one for goldfish, one for everything else.

yea, do like 5-10 fish per tank and let us know how it goes, especially after 5-10 years

Funny thing is i was about to suggest someone like bruner do something like this. If you weren't mainly accessing the internet via phone, i would suggest you create a blog or live journal.

I think feeding live fish is okay in a diet with a lot of variety as long as their disease, parasite, and thiaminase free. I'm a little skeptical of this idea of added nutrition of live feeders. How does being alive make something more nutritious than something thats dead? I mean if I have a fish swimming in my tank, I take it out and cut it's head off, and then i drop it in the tank for the piranhas to eat, that's not aas nutritious as if put the same fish into the tank alive?

By and large most experienced P keepers discourage feeders because of the risk of disease and parasites.

here are some examples of other P keepers (one of which is an ichthyologist specializing in piranha) who discourage feeding live fish to your piranhas:
