Actually if the driftwood is buoyant it will probably pull the ugf plate up. If you can find a piece of slate just drill a hole in the center and use a stainless screw to attach it to the driftwood, that will keep it down and can be covered up with gravel.
 
If that don't work just prop some rock on the drift wood to hold down for a couple of weeks until it becomes water logged. I had to do this once, and was able to prop the rock on it, in a fashion that actually looked good.
 
Hmm... That gives me another idea... But I still have to find some good rock for my drift wood... Thanks
