I have a 100 Gallon tank that im going to turn into saltwater. I was just wondering if I had all the equipment I needed? Here is a list of everything I am going to get.
1 JBJ 4 Stage Reaction Canister Filter w/ UV Sterilizer (290gph)
1 Cascade 500 Canister Filter
1 Aquaclear 30 HOB Filter
1 Coralife Super Skimmer 125
2 Hagen Tronic 150 Watt Heaters
3 Maxi Jet 1200 Powerheads
And then just misc. stuff for cleaning and stuff.

Do you think that is good for a tank that is going to be FOWLR and one day a Reef tank. I dont know what lighting im going to get yet but I will figure that out when I get some coral.

How much live rock are you intending on putting into this tank? Thats a lot of external filtration to maintain in my opinion. On the skimmer, i would go for one of the Tunze DOC range, very good skimmer and not that bad priced.

Having a UV is a good thing to have for an emergency situation like a big algae bloom or for killing of Ich when it gets to the free swimming stage, but its not something to use all the time as a UV will also kill off the good bacteria in the water column..

Circulation, i would go for the Hydor Korallia's than maxijets. They give great flow for the money and the flow itself is quite well disbursed in the tank..

Heaters, i would go with 2 200w.

Just my thoughts..

IT looks like a good skimmer but its a little to rich for my blood. Same goes for the powerhead. I can get the maxijets for like 10 bucks a piece. And the uvsterilizer filter has an on of switch for the light so it wont have to be on all the time. Just a good thing to have. And the reason I want to have so much filtration is because I had a saltwater tank before that crashed so I just want to be safe and since overfiltration is bad, mind as well.

Forget about regular FW filters. You can use the Aquaclear as a HOB fuge (I have them on all my smaller tanks). Nothing like a good skimmer though! Once you see the nasty gunk it takes out... I was pretty pleased with my Coralife Super Skimmer, if you're looking for a HOB one (also works in sump but there are better skimmers for that application). I'd get the 220 model for a 100g. Look for a local reef club at Reef Central & see if you can get a good used skimmer. Also, totally cured live rock for great prices from folks tearing down their tank.

Im so pissed I missed a deal for 200lbs of live rock and 60lbs of sand for 100 bucks. It sold within ours. Ill try to get a 220 but they are a big leap in price and I want to try and get all new equipment if I can with this tank for a nice clean look. Most equipment I have bout used has stains and dried crap all over it and it looks bad but hopefully I will get lucky.
