How well would a 72x18x18 aquarium do for the upper jaw species? I found a used one and may settle for this if I can safely house several bichirs in it. I know that it pretty much eliminates all of the lower jaws as long term. Right now I have 6" senegal, 4" albino sen, 5" delhezi, and a 5" ornate. I plan on getting a couple of palmas and probably a retropinnis eventually. Would it be better to go with a shorter and wider tank?

That should be plenty for senegals, delhezi, polli palmas, retropenis but maybe too narron for larger specy bichirs. If you have the room and money the bigger it is the better it is for you in the long run. Ideal size would be a 180 gallons tank if you want to be able to house all type of bichirs.
The ornate might be a little cramped eventually since they reach 18-24 inches but its a fine tank for smaller upper jaw species-Anne
