:footinmoui have always wanted an oscar and various other large cichlids. I threw together a rough idea/estimate for a 100 gallon DT. I am currently keeping convict cichlids, so im not what you would call an expert on compatability of non-africans, since i cant just overstock a tank filled with rocks and call it a day. So, here it goes: pleco (up for debate, as to which is most suited), firemouth cichlid, red devil cichlid, green terror cichlid, tiger oscar, jack dempsey, and perhaps a full grown male convict. They would primarily be fed cichlid pellets along with mysis shrimp and blood worms. An idea for decor is most likely driftwood, with fake plants, since im not sure how well live plants will do? The water changes would range with readings, but ideally it would be 20% every 10 days along with an hob filter and canister filter. The quantity of the water is something i have yet to truely consider until now. Could i not just use a submersible pump to speed things up and return water to the DT?

Any input would be great.

That stock is wayyyyyy to large for that size tank. You would probably need 300 gallons of water for that. The Pleco and Red devil alone maxes out the tanks capacity for fish. Besides that the aggression would be insane. A red devil will not likely tolerate anything else in the tank. I would suggest either 1 to 2 oscar (not both males), or a Green terror, Jack Dempsey combo with the convict possibly.

1st and foremost, do 50% water changes weekly, regardless of tank size.

It will eliminate all other environmental problems (for the most part) ...unless you over feed etc.

Filtration.

A sump or large canister or 2 will work best. HOB really wont be enough on that big of a bioload but if you must, 3-4 AC 110s should do the job.

Fish wise...

100g is big enough for:

a single oscar and a few small convicts/firemouths at best, no other big cichlids.
a single red devil with no tankmates. 99% of the time theyll kill all others
any combo of green terror, jd , firemouth & convicts or a 1 of each

Id personally skip a pleco unless you get something small growing like a leopard pleco. They typically put out way too much waste.

good luck!

Yea I should not have said 1 to 2. I forget how messy oscars are. I figured you could get away with 2 in a 100 if it was properly filtrated and managed but it would not be ideal.

Up until now I have pretty much been a saltwater guy, so stocking this tank pretty much has nothing related, and keeping convicts is pretty much a no brainer. I reall like oscars and jd's but aparently that isn't going to work? I would love a good combo out of these fish listed in th original post, the suggestions are helpful. I am mostly going for a flashy tank since this is in the reception/ front desk area, but I don't want lip locking and such since the general public have no clue how some cichlids interact and will see their behaviour being at the fish keepers fault. Which are most sociable and won't constantly be pulling my father away from his work to work on it, after all; time is money!

... Bump, I have considered a 40 gallon wc every 10 days, I just wasn't sure since water in a reef tank needs time for ph to adjust and such, I suppose our tapwater hardly fluctuates. Am I asking for trouble with either; A: an Oscar, jd or gt, firemouth B: just the Oscar, jd or C: the Oscar firemouth an convict?

What i would do is one center fish for example an oscar or gt than add 2 smaller fish such as convicts, firemouths, salvinis etc.... And then add a few dithers....
Also forgot to say gt's take forever to put on some size but a 10" male would definitley be a great center fish.. And a 40-50% water change would be best...

I think for an office tank I'd do a single large male cichlid with a very simple/clean aquascape such as this amazing tank by the member joecoulson

You can do either an adult Midas (like the picture), Red Devil, festae, Flowerhorn, Jag, Green Terror, etc. I love communities but I don't think I'd want to deal with the drama/mess in an office environment... single fish are much easier to care for, and honestly after seeing that tank even I wanna try it lol:naughty:

cacichlids def gives a good suggestion, a nice large show piece cichlid by itself would def be an easily manageable display tank, but as for the community i would def scratch the red devil and pleco, IMO and Oscar with a JD or GT and FM or Con would be fine as long as they all got along (this is the issue though is finding ones that will get along with each other) and yeah with a full grown oscar with tankmates, no matter what your filtration you will definitely need to be doing 50% weekly in order to keep nitrates under control and keep algae and everything from growing
