ok have a 100 gallon 60x19 up and going and just purchased a 5 in male jd 5 days ago .I think he's more docile then anything else most of the time he spends in the log hiding. What would be great tankmates for this guy.

lots of options, and yeah JDs tend to hide especially when by themselves, as for tankmates i would try a carpintis but they might look to similar and might fight each other, if he isnt a very aggressive JD you could try some severums in with him, you could do a FM and convict, a salvini would also be a nice fish that would be good with a JD, really just depends on what types of colors you are going for but pretty much anything in the medium aggression range that gets the same size or a bit smaller than the JD would be good

also i would add some dithers.giant danios, rainbows, silver dollars. just 1 species though.sarah88 suggested alot of good choices,do you have access to good stores for CA cichlids? you have many options for tankmates

yes i also agree with the fish listed. Salvinis are a favorite of mine to go with jds. You can go with tiger barbs as a dither or most barbs as well, ^+1 on the rainbow suggested, they are very lively and fun to watch. Fire mouths are also very entertaining. I wouldnt try anthing more aggresive then a pike cichlid severum fire mouth or salvini. If you get some of the semi aggressive guys its less likely youll run into disputes. Putting a green terror in with him or a texas or a pair of cons will likely cause a lot of disputes but when mixing cichlids its all trial and error so have a back up tank ready or be prepared to bring back what ever fish doesnt work out because its hard to predict what cichlids he wants to live with and the ones he doesnt. he might seem shy now but trust me a full grown jd is far from shy. The jd is a gorgeous fish. I would just go with a nice looking pair get them in breeding conditions so you see a nice color boost and you wont get bored with their breeding antics. Add some dithers like barbs and rainbows. then add a nice pleco. I wish i just got a pair of viejas for my 125 gal its way too crowded and has too much clean up needs. I might think of bringing some fish back clear some room and just get a pair of viejas still.

ok, so I did some switching around and took back the smaller jd for a bigger one around 7 inches and a female jd 5in ,so now its a pair. so im thinking of getting a school of atleast 6 silver dollars and a pleco. post some pics later.
