I had posted a similar question earlier regarding a 75 gallon tank and received very helful answers. I now have the opportunity to acquire a 100 gallon tank and would prefer to use that over the 75 gallon. I have a solid wood stand that fits the 55 gallon dimensions. As the 100 has the same length it would just over hang the width. It was suggested with the 75 that I get a piece of plywood in the dimensions of the 75 and put it underneath the tank. Would this work with the 100? Would the wieght likely be supported.

:iagree:

You may be able to make it work with the plywood but do you really wanna risk the money, time and your satisfication with end result weither it works or not? It's always wise to use the correct tool for the job but that's just my 2 cents haha.

Not a good idea.....unless the tank is gonna be somewhere that when it breaks the stand or the tank cracks you won't lose everything to a 100 gallon flood.....temporary fixes or bypasses are never a good idea in this hobby!!

a 75 on a 55g is a lot different than a 100g on a 55 stand.

with the 75 on a 55 stand with proper plywood it could work and it would not be 'top heavy' as the tanks are almost the same dimensions (just 3" of overhang on front and back)

but a 100g on a 55g stand creates two problems:

1. significant weight increase. most 55g stands may not be able to hold twice the weight.

2. it may be very 'tippy' and topple over very easily because the 100g is considerably larger and usually taller than a 75 (or 55).

this is very dangerous if you have children. if something happened a child could be killed if the tank toppled over with the child near by.

your best bet if you really want the 100g is to get another stand.
