Not really monster tank i know!

But i have a spare 100 litre tank (spose its about 120 actually but with gravel etc its about 100) and im redecorating my bedroom in african type colours, rusty browns worn furniture etc.

So for a bit of fun i was considering setting up an african biotope.
However i do NOT want to do cichlids! I have some big south americans and a lumphead already and as lovely as cichlids are i just want to try something different.

but i have little knowledge beyond cichlids :) so i want a little help!

could we try and get a little list going in this thread as to what plants and fish will be suitable for this?

i would prefer shoaling fish with one or two mid size oddball/cleaners and i think i would quite like to crack on a c02 unit and have some decent planting going on.

lets see what you can come up with!

im doing one right now actually :)

just started though...

- bichirs of all kinds... their are tons of different sized ones from monsters like endi's to 8inchers like senegalus... head over to the bichir section and they will help you out (idk how big 120 liters is lol)
- ctenopomas are also great... often called bush fish. most common is the leopard or spotted
- african knifefish
- african butterfly fish
- syno cats
- dwarf giraffe catfish
- kribs and jewel cichlids
- rope fish

except for the kribs and jewels... the others are REALLY differnt from cichlids

if you go the the poly forum and type in "african tank" and read the threads it will give you some ideas.

mm a possibility!
had a senegal before. really miss the little bugger too but i dont think an 8 inch fish would do all to well in a 2.5 foot tank
same for the bush fish really (plus i dont want to keep stocking it with shoaling fish only to have them hoovered up!)

did read an article a few hours a go on african riverine fish, mainly dull tetra, thomasi cichlids and steatocranus (got one of them already)
perhaps a couple more seato's with some hardy shoaling fish would work nice.

planting wise i think anubias derivatives will be best suited as even i cant kill them and even my oscar gave up trying to eat them so thats got to work in a small tank with some tiny buffaloheads!#

any other ideas?

Distichodus Sexfaciatus, Congo Tetras, Butterfly fish, Red eye tetras to name a few different from before....
Distichodus might get to big for your tank after a while, but get a small one- 1" - and grow it out to 7-8" then sell it!
Great fish!
Mine's a beast!
