Hey, I'm thinking about buying a 250gln tank but it's only a foot and a half wide... I've got a 100gln tank now that has plenty of width with Chiclids, it's this going to be an okay switch?

Cheers, thanks for the help

The switch will be perfectly fine. I have a tank that is only 1 foot wide, and my chiclids are perfectly fine. What type of chiclids excatly? Welcome to MFK by the way.

That sounds great. Just make sure to put enough hidding places in it for the fish, It will take them a little while to get used to the change, but they should do fine.

I would have to disagree with merbeast. I wouldn't come close to keeping an 18" fish in a tank only 18" wide. In fact, I wouldn't go any larger then 10" IMO. As a rule, I try to ensure that my tank is at least twice as wide as the lenth of my largest fish, and the lenth of the tank at least twice the tank's width. (ex. 9" fish = 18" x 36" tank).

So then your telling him that he would have an tank of 8'x16' for an 4' silver aro right. That is crazy and a waste.
That is what you are tell him.

I think the 250 would be fine for your cichlids just like said above make sure you have hiding spaces.

Not a bad rule but considering this tank is probably 8-10 foot long, the extreme length will more then make up for the narrow widht of the tank.

Not sure how silver aros relate to cichlids, but what would you keep a 4' silver aro in?

I am saying that if he is saying he keeps fish in tanks no bigger than twice the length of the fish then if he was keeping an aro then to his standards it would need and tank of 4'x16'. As for housing the aro I don't know not an expert.
