Hi there,

I felt in love with Discus and bought used 100 g tank. Then used Novus to buff it. It looks a little better and it's running couple days now but somehow the water is green. So I took some water to LFS to test it and result is
A - 1.0
N - 0
N - 0
H - 300
Ph - 7.8
My question is what causes green water? And how do i fix it? Or any suggestions will be appreciated.

Addition: I have thin gravel, couple decoration, 1 200w & 1 300w heaters, 1 water flow

sorry for double posts 'cause i can't edit it.

ps: i have no where else to put my tank so it got about 1hr sun light in the morning before 11am.

possibly algae arowth. the 1.0 ammonia supports that there is something living in the water.

discus will need 0ppm ammonia for optimal growth.

And unless u plan on breeding discus, i wouldnt use any of that buffer stuff. discus require atleast 50% every 2 or so days. And that means everytime u change water, u have to add more buffer, or else ur water will just change back to the way it was. so every buffer costs atleast $10 and treats X amount of gallons, and u have a 100 gallon tank. +50% WC every 2 days... you do the math.
And if you skip using the buffer one water change, then decide to use it the next water change, your PH will jump up, then down, then up and down= stress fish.

a stable PH (for any fish) is better than the "desired" PH. IMO...or course this doesnt mean through it in 1PH hahaha...

I kept discus in 7.8PH just fine and 200ppm. (tap water).

i run my tank with peat moss. (which does turn the water brownish, but it looks natural that way). this is a natural way to lower ph and gh+kh. with the peat moss my same tap water became: 7.0 PH, 150ppm gh, 117 kh

Thank you jdvue for your input. couple more questions: where do you buy peat moss? if i am using external filter (reaction 45) where do i put peat moss? I read somewhere saying power filter and put peat moss there. but i don't want to that and dont have room for it 'cause my fish tank is set up in the living room right underneath the LCD hanging on the wall.

ps: i am owning an RO water filter that using for drinking water and ice. I replace those filters very 6 months. I m thinking to cut the used filters to get the media in side and put those in my reaction filter. will that helps??

Anyone can help me? my fish tank is running close to 2 weeks and discus in it for 3 days now. The promblem is I did not go thru fishless cycle :WHOA: I know I was so stupid listen to lfs advice and I found this site after :) love this site. Anyway i put some Zync Stress and Seachem Stability to speed up the cycle. I just tested this morning and it read

Ammonia - .25
Nitrite - 5.0
Nitrate - 5.0

Question 1: Am I close to the end of cycle? and I am planning to do 25% water change tomorrow, is it nessary?

Question 2: Also regard to my RO filter media (see pic below, there are different media in those tubes and I replace them very 6 months), can I put those media in my fish tank filer? and does it help anything??

Thank you in advance,

Yes do the water change, as for the RO media, don't add it to the tank. Can you get hold of any aged filter media to speed up the cycle?

can you put in later when it's stablish?

Thank you Yanbbrox

I don't use RO water, only "aged" water to keep the PH stable which is one of the most important things in discus keeping. I used tetra safe start to cycle my tank in 2 weeks!! Then I added the discus. But if your tank is uncycled, then I'd do daily water changes till it is. I'm sure you know this but discus are very sensitive to water quality. Oh yeah one more thing, I don't have any live plants in my 100G with 13 juvies. To me live plants cause more problems than anything if your not on top of them............

just tested today and it's great.
ammonia 0.00
nitrite 0.00
nitrate 10.00

is it normal with nitrate 10.00????

thank you,
