My 5 year old had a hermit crab in there...had...sssh dont tell her. I was saving that tank for her to ahve a cool little critter as a pet. Its currently full of calci sand. so what do i do with it? it needs to be something easy to take care and something she can feed herself. any ideas?

give the tank to your husband so he can use it as a tank for something like blind cave tetras or other cool fish that are too small and incompatible with the fish in his main tank.

You want to keep it as is with the calci sand?

Tiny geckoes might be only option but I know you dont like geckoes.

If you remove the calci sand
dwarf hamsters you already have so thats out but a couple of firebelly toads might be something to consider if your child doesnt mind dropping crickets in there ,etc to feed them.
Even newts are good and no need to feed crickets.

If you want the calci sand look its limiting to tiny geckoes or small desert type snakes like shovelnose but those are all boring pets for a child.

Those African pygmy mice are interesting or zebra mice.

Leopard geckos are good however dont forget they require more space then that, they need life food and they need carefull handling because of their tail, not exacly what I would recomend for a 5 year old unless he understends that he has to respect its pet sleep needs (geckos are nocturnal) and that he must be carefull handling. A big tame bearded dragon would be a idea. None would like calci sand. Use paper towells. Also I would avoid most newts because they are absolutley hands of pets and specialy not fire bellies because they contain tetradotoxin and it wouldnt be good if your kid putted one in its mouth. Its OK IF your kid knows they are like fish, look but not toch. If you get rid of the sand and make a small planted aquarium it would be good for a trio of african dwarf clawed frogs

like i said to the hubby, it has a crack in it so it doesnt hold water.

Louie youve been paying attention :) no i dont like little geckos, for whatever reason any lizard under 5" is yuck with me. give me a 2 ft beardy anyday but a tiny house gecko YUCK! heebee jeebees

My daughter is very very very good at understanding and caring for pets. she has handled everything from 2 week old hamsters so 2ft beardies, to snakes, to 5lb dogs, to 100lb dogs. She is a very good pet keeper and respects all animals. I was thinking about leapard geckos as i tink i can handle them when they are big but like they said above i dont think for right now i can house an adult which would be the only size ide like.

If i do frogs or toads or newts can they be waterless? how would i add a bathing area for any of these? and no she wont mind crickets.

what about a sand boa?
