I have a 10g tank, recently started. My tank is heated by the room, temp ranging from 68-90+ (estimation for Wisconsin apartment a/c used sparingly)
I plan to plant it more extensively but currently only has some italian val. I want to get some sort of fauna for this tank, and am leaning toward shrimp or crayfish. Ideally, these would breed and be viable diet supplements for a fish (sunfish?) that I would keep in another larger tank. I like the idea of crayfish because ultimately im interested in a Wisconsin native tank and they would fit that better than shrimp, but I like what seems like the ease of breeding of shrimp (correct me if Im wrong). Also my tank does not have a lid yet. I know this will be a problem for shrimp, would crayfish jump or climb out of my tank? Does this setup seem viable? How difficult is it to breed crayfish? Shrimp? How fast would each multiply?

Crayfish NEED a lid they have no problem getting out and love exploring. A crayfish also eats and dig up plants. As for feed in them to a sunfish i wouldnt you'd most likely have to feed it baby crayfish and if your tank has a lot of place to hide they will and grow be warned I have seen a cray take down a fish twice it's size. That's if your going to feed them live I don't know exactly how feeding live would go but that what iam guess will happen from experence. Crayfish a territoral wich mean that when one mates with other if it feels like it is in danger it will not go into berry and the over all proces is diffecult depending on the species.

okay, I will probably go with shrimp then. Thanks for the info. Do shrimp sound like a good option in my tank? What species would fit the bill, easy and productive to breed, good in unheated tank? Unfortunately I cant provide my water parameters.

You could try Red Cherry Shrimp. Pretty easy to breed and I don't have a heater in my Fluval Edge. Just keep a sponge on any filter intake tube to prevent any babies from getting sucked up.
