My oscar is one of my favorite fish who is unfortunately living in a bin right now. I'm getting a new tank tomorrow and I was wondering how large his tank mates ( if I add any) should be? He is a big softy and has never fought with any fish he has been with. If it can't fit in his mouth he never bothers it. Even fish he can eat he leaves alone for weeks until he decides to eat them. So how large should the tank mates be for an 11" oscar?

I have all kinds of fish with my Oscars. I have an angelfish, Bala sharks, a Rainbow shark, 5 Clown Loaches, 5 pictus cats and a red tail cat.

here is a decent size list:
Cichlids
Severum Semi Aggressive - 8 to 10" - Omnivore

Fire Mouth Semi Aggressive - 6" - Omnivore

Convict Aggressive - 6" - Omnivore - Easy Breeder

Acara Semi Aggressive - 5 to 6" - Omnivore

Green Texas Semi Aggressive - 12" - Omnivore

Rainbow Semi Aggressive - 5" - Omnivore

Jack Dempsey Aggressive - 10" - Carnivore

Salvini Aggressive - 6" - Omnivore

Green terror Semi Aggressive - 8" - Omnivore

Geo's (eartheaters) Semi Aggressive - 6" to 10" - Omnivore

Synspilum/Firehead or Redhead Cichlid Aggressive - 16" - Omnivore

Black Belt Cichlid Semi Aggressive - 10" to 12" - Omnivore

Red Spotted Cichlid Semi Aggressive - 10" - Omnivore

Dithers
Silver Dollars Peaceful - 6" - Herbivore - Likes to be in groups

Rainbows Peaceful - 1" to 6" - Omnivore - Likes to be in groups

Bottom Feeders
Plecos Peaceful - 3" to 24" - Omnivore - Some plecos have specific dietary requirements.

Synos Peaceful - 3" TO 12" - Omnivore

What size tank are you getting?

This tank is 90 gallons but is only temporary. I have a 55, 20, 5, 10 and the ninety I'm getting tomorrow. The 55 will eventually be replaced by the 90 and the ninety replaced by a 180+ tank. I just want to know how large a fish he can eat lol. Like is my other 3" oscar safe with him?

Is he a big softy because he has other tankmates and faired well with them?

first and foremost it needs be larger in both length and height so that the Oscar cannot swallow it :)

for example, a 4" Pike cichlid might get eaten, where a 4" Severum might be too "tall"

I have had a 3" flowerhorn, 3" oscar, 4" convict, 5" blue acei and a 4" jack dempsey with him and he never showed any aggression. BUT he ate the ten tetras I gave him and a goldfish ( I know goldfish are horrible, I didn't want him to eat it). He is alone in a big tub I got him for now and will be alone in the ninety gallon for now. I want to have the two oscars together and try to breed them( the ninety gallon is temporary don't worry).

bump?

im contemplating getting a 180 for my 9" o, if i get it id be getting

4-5" pbass
some type of pike
~12" aro
polys
thorichthys aureus
giant danios or silver dollars
some type of catfish
etc.

i hope that gives you an idea, but my o is pretty aggressive and for your situation i would say fully grown polys, geos, mid sized ca's like cons, sajica, salvini, and any thorichthys sp. are all good ideas, though the ca's can be aggressive, i think the oscar would be fine with that kind of size on him

with my 2 oscars i have,

2 firemouths ( T meeki and T mixteco 3 inches)
2 jack dempseys ( 1.5 inches for both )
1 female convict ( 1 inch )
1 salvini ( 1 inch )
3 black skirts ( around 2 inches or so give or take )
4 male guppys
4 to 6 or more baby swordtails.

im hoping my final stock will be like this:

2 oscars
1 jack D
2 firemouths ( T meeki T mixteco )
1 female convict
1 salvini

tank is only a 110-5 footer

and so far no aggression from the oscars, once in a while they will go and chase the black skirts or guppys or swordtails but ive yet to see them chase the cichlids.

If I had to pick I would go for a Jack Dempsey with your Oscar. Mine have never bothered each other at all even when the Oscar steals all the food.

They just pass by each other - this might be a solution for you but I think everyone else pretty much covered it for you, so just my late opinion :)
