Okay. SO! I bought my biggest tank so far. I got a 118 Gallon tank, (yea, wierd size) and it's the first one I've bought with NOTHING in it. No heaters, filter, rocks, etc...

The first thing I need to know is what kind of filter I need?
I'm about to buy some biowheel overhangs, and use those. (used ones for cheap) But I was considering buying canister?
My 75 Gallon has eheim proffesionel II, but I can't afford a new one of those :(

I'm browsing filters online, but they are usually sorted by GPH, not by tank size.
What should the GPH be for the large tank? or for any tank really (I'm assuming there's a way of figuring out the GPH by simple math for the size of the tank)

Second, it has no lid, and no stand. I was considering either buying a 72"x18" Big Al's stingray stand, but also considered building my own. As for the lid, the chances of me finding one for a 118 are pretty low, so was considering building that as well. Any advice?

Any other startup tips would be great too. I haven't gone over 75 yet, but that tank was ready to go. This is the first one from scratch!

Thanks guys!

What are you looking to spend on a filter? Canisters are the way to go, check your local craigslist and the MFK buy/sell section and see what's available.

don't buy a stingray stand from big als. they are just particle board and will not last over time. I have had to replace several in store displays from water damage when I worked there over the years.

either build your own or buy a 72x18 tube steel stand from them.

what are the dimensions on this tank?

XP3's are a good canister for the money. as are AC110 HOB filters.

one of each is a very good combo.
