I'm setting up my first aquarium, a 12 gallon high (fluval edge) with filter and a heater and live plants (I don't have the tank yet) I will have cycled the tank etc, I'm just looking for a straight answer and a reason why. So here's the question... I know I can keep an african dwarf frog and a betta fish together, I also know I can keep an upside down catfish and a bristle nose pleco together (I read these are the smallest) but can I keep all of these together in a 12 gallon? If so, would it be possible to add a reed-fish in? If I am completely wrong about this could someone list a few oddball tropical fish or frogs etc I could keep in this tank? (I'm not going with the usual gold fish because I have had so many in the past. I want to try something tropical and unusual.)

Reedfish are unsuitable at 16inches plus they will be to big and make a meal out of your frog, bristlenose plecos need 20gallons minimum as they get 6inches.
If i were you I'd rethink the stock here are some options
X1 African dwarf frogs
X1 plakat betta (short fins are less tempting for other tankmates)
X2 bumblebee gobies
X1 wrestling halfbeak
X2 otocinclus catfish (best algae eaters)
X2 peacock gudgeon
X4 pygmy corydoras
Or if you wanted larger fish
X1 butterfly fish
X1 upside down catfish
X2 thomasi dwarf cichlids
Over filter the tank and add an air brick, choices of plants are optional but easy plants include
Java fern (narrow,windelov,trident)
Anubias(nana,barteri var)
Limnophila sessiflora
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis
African water fern
Vallisneria
Bacopa
Hope it helps
