Hey guys,

I am thinking of getting a larger tank, but I live in an apt and 120g- 125 gallon filled should weight about 1400 pound. Does anyone know if the apt floors will support that weight? Where can I find out?

Thanks,
Wil

Wil, I used to keep 12 tanks in a NYC apartment, the largest of which was 125G on a wooden cabinet stand with wooden cap. I always made sure I placed my larger tanks against a wall into which the load bearing beams under my floor were situated, so the tank would straddle several beams (rather than running parallel to them and possibly not crossing any load bearing beams at all). Since I lived in a brownstone it was easy to know where the beams were situated, as they generally run from common-wall to common-wall in such a building. If I were you I'd look to see where floor beams run and place the tank across them. Just my experiend. - CN

Excellent post!

You can also use some 2X6's under the stand to spread out the load bearing wt on the floors.

Going with an acrylic tank will also shed alot of pounds vs. a glass tank. I've seen some great deals out there on plexiglass tanks. SeaClear and Truvu make bullet proof, quality tanks.

Good luck
