Which type of filter should I go with on a 125 gallon tank? My friend said a Magnum 300 was the best? But there's alot of different options.

I plan on going with a Fahaka if I can find one. I will being using sand.

Any suggestions would be great thanks.

Eheim are the best BIO filters but their mechanical filtration gets clogged quickly and don't have alot of flow rate besides the pro series but those are big bucks. Magnum 350 have sufficient mechanical filtration but thats it. No bio filtration really. Fluvals offer a 3-stage filtration and can handle all the types of filtration you want. Also you can get a few HOBs instead of canister filters. Marineland bio-wheels are excellent and so are Aquaclears.

Almost every canister on the market can be made into a 3 stage filter, and many HOB's are 3 stage as well.

For a fahaka, you are going to want some moderate flow rates. Fluval FX5's are about the best mech filters out there for canisters, Eheim's are the best for bio out there for canisters. I am personally along the lines of using an Eheim canister for bio. Being that fahakas put out a lot of waste, a big bio filter would be very important. I'd personally run an eheim 2260, 2080, or 2078. To aid in mechanical filtration, the addition of one or two Aquaclear 110s.

I will extend my neck out here and say I've been using a huge Cyprio Hozelock cannister pond filter on my fresh water 120 and its been doing fine. I got it as a closeout at a koi shop. Couldnt beat the price.

I did make a small mod on it where I made a net inside to hold some charcoal just for a little added edge. Otherwise, water's clean, params are good and so far so good.

fluval FX5 will be the best canister filter for your needs.
Not necessarily. For big fish that are messy eaters (especially puffers), bio-filtration is far more important. FX5 canisters are primarily a mech filter. There are better filters out there for puffers. Big eheims will do much better for the fahaka, and an AC110.
