Planning to get a group of 1.5" juvenile rio mag umbee and keeping the best male and female. Have the choice between 3 different footprints of 120 gallon tanks. L x W x H; 72 x 18 x 24 or 48 x 24 x 24 or 60 x 20 x 20 (haven't seen this last option readily available just was told I could order it). I realize how big these fish get and my plan within the next 1-2 years is to get my 300+ gallon tank. But for the first 1-2 years, which 120 gallon footprint would you recommend and why?

Always the 6 footer, more swimming room.....& even in the confines of the 6' tank, you will find out sooner rather than later what "con-specific aggression" means. Umbee fry do not tolerate each other's presence for long after about 2" in size.....& you may want to plan on getting a much larger aquarium than 300GL for a pair of Umbees....there is a member on this site(JasonR) who has a lone Umbee in a 300GL tank he built himself....& that fish makes that tank look small.

Thanks for the advice. Yea I get to witness a good amount of con-specific aggression through breeding salvinis. Ill definitely be pushing for a larger tank if possible for long term.
