Is 1200gph too much of a turn over rate for a 125 gallon? Do you guys think this is overkill for a 125 with just a wet/dry for its only filtration? I've read that you need to turn over at least 6 times the volume of your tank per hour but is there any harm in going for more than that? With a pump rated at 1200 gph what size bulkhead would i need for the overflow?

nope, i say go for it i use my 2200g with a 800g filter for my 75.

IMO, shoot for at least 10X turnover. I like the pondmaster pumps from Danner. The pondmasters have a longer cord and bigger wire in the cord. They generate less heat. It has a barbed threaded output but I don't remember the size. It should be lised in the catalog or call and ask. Use a u-tube instead of an elbow OR step-up to a 1500 or 1800gph.

alright. i do want at least 10x my tank volume turned over per hour so i can step the pump up to 1800 or maybe even 2400 gph right? would one 1.5" bulkhead for overflow be enough to handle that?

Sorry, brain fart. You mean to supply your filter with water from your tank not the return. Right? There's not enough difference in the price to justify using a 1 1/2 vs a 2. Buy a 2". Danner makes a monster too. Before making the purchase, check the prices on other options. There may be a sweet spot in there somewhere that you can take advantage of. If you're offered the choice between an aquamaster or the pond master, take the pond master.

the mag24is WAYYYY too much for a 125. Its SUPER loud as well. i tried it and returned it the same day.

I run a mag12 on my 125 with dual 1" overflows and its perfect. The mag18 really doesnt flow anymore at 5' of head than a 12 and its more money and uses more electricity.

Howdy,

It also greatly depends on what fish you keep, and what their natural habitat is like.
