120G GT Tank

Hi guys

My name is Ozer i have just recently joined this great forum and yeah here is my first post and my hello to you guys!

By the way i'm from Switzerland so sorry if my English is not perfect

After keeping discus fish for almost 1.5 years i've decided to change the setup of my 120G tank. Discus fish are nice but i don't know, i wanted something different. The last weeks i have been researching lot's of different fish and read so many threads in this forum and on the internet. My first choice was an oscar but i've decided that my tank is not big enough (even if they say 75G would be enough). So finally last week i've found the future king (or queen) of my tank. A Green Terror (Aequidens rivulatus). Nice size, nice colors and i think a really interesting fish! I'm planning to keep only one fish (maybe together with an algae eater). So he/she will be alone in this tank.

My tank is now cycling for more than 3 weeks and yesterday i've added more driftwood to the tank. Now my questions: Should i add caves or more hiding places? Can i add a larger cryptocoryne (or other plant) and also keep it in the tank (or will they be uprooted by the GT)? Also i'm planning to add some floating plants. What do you guys think about my setup? Should i change something? And would be a bristlenose okay as an algae eater?

Tank size: 120G - 59x19.7x25.6in or 450L - 150x50x65cm
Filtration: 2x Eheim 2078

Oh and i will add the fish in about 3-4 weeks (will go on vacations first).

Nice looking setup
You may need some caves for your bottom fish. What are you considering getting?

Tank looks great! Will be a nice home for your GT.
You can try to keep some plants like cryptocorynes. The GT might uproot or eat some of them sometimes, I'd just replant or replace when this happens.
Floating plants would look great and help the fish feel comfortable. The fish would probably be okay with your tank as-isif you added plants in the sand and floating. But more caves/hides can't hurt if you wanted to add more. I also think a bristlenose is a good choice of algae eater, and that you should add some dither fish like large Colombian tetras or similar.

Beautiful tank. You can add plants if you’d like. Stick with hardy ones. While the gt is small it will ignore them. Once it gets big keeping plants might be more of a challenge. I keep trying with mine. Lol

I agree some schooling fish would be good to add too. It will make a juvi gt feel safer and more comfortable.

thanks for your responses. ok will check how i can add more hiding spaces and will check to get a hardy plant, together with floating plants. but honestly i didn't think about dither fish. didn't know that GT could be shy in the beginning. do i not risk that dither fish get eaten once the GT is bigger?

Some risk yes, but usually if you go with larger dithers like the Colombians, Buenos aires, etc. they are quick enough to avoid becoming a snack. It is pretty common for a young fish to be very shy if it is the only fish swimming around in a large tank.

I have a few different ones in with mine. I have giant danios, a few different types of rainbow fish, and a couple glow tetras.
The only problem I’ve had is with orange and yellow tetras, and an emerald rainbow. My big female is mostly to blame. The rainbow I have no idea what happened. The first night in the tank someone beat her so bad she died a few days later despite everything I tried to save her

Small gts are very shy when they are alone or in big open spaces. Even outgoing fry I’ve moved to a growout tank become shy because their are no other fish besides their siblings.

Tomorrow there will be the monthly meeting of a local aquarium club where they also sell plants and fish. Will see if there is something interesting. (I also have a 55G tank which is running but fishless)...

Guys i will close this thread. My heart just says "get the oscar, get the oscar" and i have decided to stick with my first thoughts, so it will be one oscar and not a green terror . Also i do have the possibility to upgrade in 1-2 years to an almost 160g tank, which could be my next project. Only need to start saving some money! lol But i think 120g is okay for the moment.
