Ok so im back after 10 years had a 55g freshw simple angle tank. I picked up a 125g acrylic tank that is drilled only 1. 2in hole behind the weir. I really dont want to get into a sump filter thinking a fulva fx4. But i do not know what to do about this hole. Do i hook the canister up to it? Or just put a bulk head in and plug it. I plan on doing a planted tank and only having a few bristle nose plecos and a betta in it. Nothing more for at least a year. Fyi in my 55g i had 5 angles and some guppies. With 2 bio wheel filters rated at 75g a pice. Thank you. I have not set up anything yet because i need to wet sand and polish the tank still.

I usually just cap the holes with bulkheads when I have drilled tanks, and don't bother with plumbing anything to them. But you could hook a sump up easily, would be a good idea.

Another vote for a sump as it’s so much easier to clean and maintain over a canister, not to keeping heaters out of the display tank. I’ve got 2 large sumps on each of my 180’s and FX6 on my 72g and each month when I clean the Fluval I’m cussing how much I hate the damn thing, Lol.

Although I'm a sump guy, it is easy to get an appropriate size bulkhead and cap it off (be sure to use plenty of teflon tape. and get the proper thread)
below a threaded bulkhead.

depending on how is is threaded, caps can go on the outer thread, or inner.
below a cap for inner thread

and a cap that fits outer thread

Why don't you like sump filters? They are the easiest to maintain. You don't have to put ugly equipment in the tank especially for an aquascape.

I have never used a sump before and the prices seam a bit high. Plus my power goes on and off everytime it rains here in fl witch is once a day. I have been watching the diy guy to do filters. I just need the quietest option. Happy wife happy life

You can slap a gate vavle on that two inch line and have total control of your gph, get a used tank for a sump, some filter socks and a jebao DC pump.

You can set the height of the water level in the sump to account for power outtages and also drill some siphon breaks along with check valves.

If possible can you drill another hole to set up and emergency drain ?

Agree with Jaw7777, sumps are IMO almost cheaper than commercial filters, mine are made from old tanks(often found on the roadside), or barrels and the like.
The only expense being a pump, and some PVC.

I will admit that noise can be a problem, the sound of rushing water is often unavoidable, but the options available to optimum filtration in sumps is endless.

A sump does not have to be expensive at all and you can definitely put one together for less than a fx4. I was hesitant to go with a sump at first, just because it seemed complicated. It can be as simple as a plastic tote with some mechanical filtration and submerged media. You can go hog wild with chambers, trickle towers, reactors, etc... but none of that is necessary to get the job done. The only complication I see is the single drain, ideally as a safety measure you would want an emergency drain as J jaws7777 pointed out. Drilling tanks is not that hard, you just want to make sure the hole is in an appropriate spot. Loads of info on here and youtube about the process.
