hey i was wondering if a fx5 is enough filtration in a 125 gallon. i have 3 oscars, 1 jack dempsey, 1 green terror, 3 descent sized tiger barbs, 2 small catfish that wont get very big, and a sucker. i have a extra whisper 60 i could throw on. let me know. thanks

You need another filter IMHO especially with that bio load you have. You are well overstocked so I would add another canister to the tank or perferably a sump with tons of bio filtration.

To give a point of reference I have an FX5 and an XP4 on my 125 and have 2 oscars, green terror, and 2 pictus. Hope you plan on upgrading with that much stock...

First question is, what are you using now?
Next, how`s your water quality?

Another filtration question and more "overkill" answers. Obviously, the more filtration the better but an fx5 has enough flow and room for enough bio media. You'll be fine as long as you do water changes. You'll learn real quick if you hang around this forum that everything is overkill. I'm sure you'll get flamed about being overstocked too. The truth is that there are a lot of memers on here that don't practice what they teach and just like to jump on the bandwagon and flame someone who seems inexperienced. Youre fine as far as filtration goes. Stock may be an issue with fighting and territory, but only time will tell. There are no black and white answers in fishkeeping like the majority of the people on this site believe.

I would have to agree with most of this. When your Oscars are over 12 inches and GT is approaching a good 10 inches and everything else is getting huge after several years then I would invest in another smaller filter. The Pleco will get pretty big, so like I said another filter after several years will be needed. Until then though just do weekly gravel vacs. Oscars are messy as can be, not even lying. Ask anyone. You could sly by with less gravel vacs without Oscars easily but the 3 and the Pleco will make you have to gravel vac weekly or your Nitrates will be off the charts. Other than that, your set for awhile. Obviously WC's weekly and normal keep up will make this work, otherwise 15 FX5's won't matter if your doing WC's every 6 months.

thanks everyone. soulpatch, i was considering a rena xp3 to add also. but im going to wait like creepyoldguy and packer43064 say. like they said only time will tell. thanks to you all. if anyone else has ideas or input im open to it. thanks

A loaded Fx5 is rated at 607gph according to the manual. A 4.856 per hour turnover rate is adequate for this aquarium. Topped by normal w/c and maintanence, this will be perfectly fine.
