Hey guys, I'm starting over with my 125 gallon tank, and trying to figure out how to stock it.

Just ordered a new fx6 for the tank, and I'm going to run my extra penguin 350 just cause I have nothing else to do with it, so I should have pretty solid filtration. It currently has a sand substrate. Other than that, I haven't planned out much, except I would like to include some plants (real or fake) driftwood, and some rocks, however nothing is really set in stone.

Ideally, I would like to make this a community tank with either a single larger CA/SA cichlid or possibly a pair. I have been trying to do as much research as possible, but I can't seem to come up with a stock list that I'm happy with AND will actually work with my setup.

One possiblity I've considered is:

2 x EBJD
5x Silver $
5x Clown Loach
1x BN Pleco

Could that work?

Im sure in a tank that size it would work. However I would up the numbers of your schooling fish (Clowns & Dollars) They are more comfortable in larger schools, generally I have found they do best in numbers of 10+. However, if you are stocking with full grown adult loaches e.g 12inch or larger maybe reduce it to 8 to save on Bioload. The dollars will tear up any live plants so it would need to be fake. Can I ask what the footprint of the tank is? LengthxWidth

I may suggest you look at other options than the Dollars, after a while they quite frankly get boring. That's only my opinion anyway. Nicer alternatives that would work equally aswell could be some barbs, ones that spring to mind are Denison barbs and spanner barbs.

I may change some of the info once I know the footprint. :)

Should work. Are the ebjd your large fish? Paraneetroplus Melanurus are very peaceful, colorful, large cichlids and are great for community tanks. For plants I have green tiger lotus, Amazon swords, anubias, and onion plants with silver dollars, sevs, and a melanurus and none of these notorious plant eaters touch them.

The tank dimensions are 72 x 18 x 22... I've definitely thought of adding more, I was just concerned that I would be overstocking

bbortko - yes the ebjd would be my "large" fish, but damn those Paraneetroplus Melanurus are beautiful fish too. Now you've got me thinking I've gotta keep looking!

I think it could work but I'd be careful adding too many sd's. Even in my 8' tank they get spooked and start smashing into things. At 4-5" each they can go some damage.

I'm keeping a school of Roselines (15) in my 135 with a crew of plecos and a few odd fish. Much cooler fish for your footprint IMO although more expensive.

Interesting, I thought most people really liked silver dollars... I'm completely open to your ideas though. Barbs might be a more exciting way to go it sounds like?

It's not that they are bad at all, but they grow pretty big, eat a ton and spook really easily. They can definitely work, but I got tired of ducking every time I'd walk in the room lol. They scared the crap outta me constantly ….

I had Tiger barbs in with a solo JD and it worked up till around 6". Definitely a cheaper more durable option.
