So, my dad constructed a tank for me for my new 125...Built with 2x4's and 2x6's along the top and bottom and 4x4 posts in the corners. My question is, do i need to have a top on the stand or any support braces across the middle. The perimeter is definately strong enough and the posts in the corners are more than adequate, but he claims that it doesn't need a top or any braces down the center...

Will I be fine without something along the middle? The tank itself has a center brace and everything, but....

umm, at work at the moment, but it is one of the older 125's with just the center brace in the middle and I think the glass is like 3/8" thick along the sides, and I would assume the bottom is the same...

I was under the impression that you don't need interior support for a glass tank but you do for an acrylic tank. On the cheap particle board stand that came with my 110 gallon only the perimeter of the tank is supported. There is absolutely no support for the bottom of the tank and it hasn't been a problem for 20+ years.

that is good to know as that is how mine currently sits...I looked at some of the stands at Petsmart and feeders supply and theirs were only around the perimeter also, so I guess that is how they are supposed to be..I have a 20 gal like that also, but my 30 gal and 72 gal have a top on them, so idk....

Yep, but I believe this can only be done on a glass tank. I believe an acrylic tank requires support for the entire bottom.
